The journey of an update
The path from Rivian to your vehicle.
The short version
- Roamer can alert you before the Rivian app. Flagged means Rivian has selected your vehicle; installation comes later.
- Connect+ means early, not first. Connect+ is the only way to get rollout priority. Your position within a wave is random, so you may still wait several days.
- Wi-Fi won't get you flagged sooner. Once selected, connect your vehicle to Wi-Fi. Downloading and verification are automatic; 100% downloaded doesn't mean ready to install.
- Install when prompted. Follow the requirements and time estimate on your display. Have everyone leave before starting; you can't drive during installation.
01 / RELEASE
The rollout begins
Rivian starts with a small group of vehicles, then expands to larger groups called waves. This gives Rivian time to catch issues before a wider release.
How rollout timing works
Connect+ is Rivian's connectivity subscription. Subscribers, including those on a trial, get priority in early waves. Your position within a wave is random. Vehicles without Connect+ still receive software updates.
New waves normally go out on business days. That's the pattern we see in Roamer's rollout tracking. Weekends and holidays can extend the wait; Rivian sets the schedule.
02 / SELECTION
Your vehicle is selected
Rivian has selected, or “flagged,” your vehicle to receive the update. This can happen even while your vehicle is offline.
Roamer can alert you now with a linked Rivian account. The official Rivian app waits until downloading and verification finish.
An early heads-up. Flagged means ready to download. Installation comes later.
03 / DOWNLOAD
Downloading the update
Once flagged, your vehicle downloads automatically over Wi-Fi. A phone hotspot works too. Allow roughly 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the connection and update size.
Connections and download progress
Wi-Fi is usually fastest. Connect+ includes cellular downloads as a fallback, which can take several hours. Some urgent updates may use cellular without Connect+.
Check progress on your center display or Roamer dashboard. Once flagged, downloading and installation can happen on weekends too.
04 / VERIFICATION
Verifying the download
Your vehicle checks the downloaded files and prepares them for installation. This happens automatically and may take around 20 minutes.
A download at 100% can still be in this stage. Once verification finishes, the Rivian app shows the update as ready to install.
05 / INSTALLATION
Installing the update
The update is ready. Start from the Rivian app or center display, or let a scheduled update run if you've enabled that option.
You can't drive during installation. Screens, locks, and app controls may be unavailable. Let the update finish without pressing pedals or controls.
Check installation requirements
Follow the requirements on your center display. Park with at least 35 miles of range, disconnect from DC fast charging, and turn off Pet Comfort, Tire Change mode, and vehicle leveling where available. The 12V battery must be healthy and system temperatures within range.
Your vehicle checks whether installation can begin. Resolve any requirements shown, and check your Rivian owner's guide for your model's full instructions.
06 / COMPLETE
The update is complete
Your vehicle restarts and confirms the update is complete. Follow any on-screen prompts, then you're ready for your next drive.
Read the latest release notes to see what's changed.
Troubleshooting
The download says “Connection Lost”
Check Wi-Fi signal strength or try another network or phone hotspot. Downloads may resume when the connection improves. If the problem persists, contact Rivian Support.
Installation hasn't finished or has failed
Check your center display for instructions. Let a progressing installation finish. If progress stops, it runs well beyond its estimate, or the vehicle reports a failure, contact Rivian Support before retrying.
What about driver-assistance data updates?
Some updates, such as driver-assistance data, download separately over Wi-Fi without this full installation and restart. Follow the prompts shown for your vehicle.
